Basics of Inclusion
Watch this short video to learn more about this class.
According to the Division for Exceptional Children (DEC), “Inclusion is children of all abilities learning, playing, and working together.” While this sounds great, teachers and parents may wonder if inclusion is really the best choice for a child. Will the child with disabilities struggle and the child without disabilities fall behind? This course introduces learners to the value of inclusion, steps to creating an inclusive classroom, laws regarding inclusion of children with disabilities, benefits to everyone involved, and the importance of teamwork with families. Participants will create their own inclusion policy and will practice pre-admissions conversations with parents. This is a 3 hour course worth .3 CEUs.
This course can be utilized to meet the training requirements to earn or renew your Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. Course content is aligned with the CDA Subject Area 8: Understanding principles of child development and learning.

“I am glad I took this course, as it has made me more aware and given me useful information to make accommodations and adjust my activities and lesson plans based on children with different abilities. All children deserve to be included in every walk of life.”

“This course on Inclusion can directly impact the way I interact with my players as a coach, and I can use the knowledge from this course to change my practice plans and schedules to ensure that all players are actively participating in practice. I have a few players who have some sort of disability… by changing my practice plan and actively encouraging the typically developing players to befriend and support them, I believe I can make a completely inclusive practice environment which is safe and comfortable for every player regardless of physical or mental ability.”
-Chase A., NM, 2021
