Phonological Awareness: The Connection of Sounds to Reading
Phonological awareness is a set of skills that develop a child's ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in language. Research has demonstrated that phonological awareness is a critical factor for reading success. For teachers to effectively support the development of Phonological Awareness, they need to be able to identify phonological awareness skills and tasks in the proper sequence of development. In this course, participants will learn and practice phonological awareness tasks and activities to engage children in learning activities that are targeted and fun. This is a 4-hour course worth 0.4 CEUs.

“Going forward in my classroom, I will change the way I've been teaching as I have learned how to better implement Phonemic Awareness in my learning time. I will do this by breaking down specific words that we are trying to learn to help them better understand the sounds they make and how they look written down… In the future, I hope this helps prepare them for kindergarten.”
